The heat of shortening and the dynamic constants of muscle

چکیده

The hope was recently expressed (Hill 1937, p. 116) that with the development of a more accurate and rapid technique for muscle heat measurement, a much more consistent picture might emerge of the energy relations of muscles shortening (or lengthening) and doing positive (or negative) work. This hope has been realized, and some astonishingly simple and accurate relations have been found, relations, moreover, which (among other things) determine the effect of load on speed of shortening, allow the form of the isometric contraction to be predicted, and are the basis of the so-called “ visco-elasticity” of skeletal muscle. This paper is divided into three parts. In Part I further developments of the technique are described: everything has depended on the technique, so no apology is needed for a rather full description of it and of the precautions necessary. In Part II the results themselves are described and discussed. In Part I I I the “ visco-elastic” properties of active muscle are shown to be a con sequence of the properties described in Part II.

Teaching from classic papers: Hill's model of muscle contraction.

A. V. Hill's 1938 paper "The heat of shortening and the dynamic constants of muscle" is an enduring classic, presenting detailed methods, meticulous experiments, and the model of muscle contraction that now bears Hill's name. Pairing a simulation based on Hill's model with a reading of his paper allows students to follow his thought process to discover key principles of muscle physiology and ga...

Work and heat in a muscle twitch.

In a single twitch, when a muscle shortens against a load, doing work, the heat produced is independent of the work done, provided the amount of shortening is kept constant. The total energy liberated may be expressed as (A -jW + ax)9 where A is the heat of activation, W is the work and ax is the heat of shortening. This relation is true not merely for the whole contraction but for any part of ...

An Investigation on the Effects of Gas Pressure Drop in Heat Exchangers on Dynamics of a Free Piston Stirling Engine

This paper is devoted to study the effects of pressure drop in heat exchangers on the dynamics of a free piston Stirling engine. First, the dynamic equations governing the pistons as well as the gas pressure equations for hot and cold spaces of the engine are extracted. Then, by substituting the obtained pressure equations into the dynamic relationships the final nonlinear dynamic equations gov...

Determination of Bio-Oxidation Energy Released by Thermophiles in Secondary and Mixed Bio-Solids

Reaction constants and heat release during thermophilic aerobic digestion of typical secondary and mixed sludges were determined. Maximum reaction constant, determined by measuring the amounts of biodegradable volatile suspended solids (bVSS) removed, occurred in the temperature range of 55-60 ºC. Measurement of heat releases were carried out, at the same range, by the aid of a temperature ...
